Why is Norfolk, VA so bad?

This is likely an emotion that almost everyone living in Norfolk feels at some point. I'd also state that it's something everyone at almost every military duty station has thoughts and it is often challenging to not feel like the grass is greener somewhere else. Even if you aren't in the military, sometimes the place you're living just gets old. I could now go on a long post about all the reasons Norfolk is awesome, but instead I'm going to reccomend three great day trips to get out of Norfolk.
Charlottesville, VA - Often known for the beautiful apple picking in the fall, Charlottesville is also home to Monticello- home of Thomas Jefferson, incredible winieries, and the University of Virginia. A beautiful hilly countryside is a radically different feel than the coastal environment of Norfolk, so a quick 2.5 hour drive can make you feel like you're in a completely different world.
Smithfield, VA - A much quicker trip, Smithfield is about 45 minutes from Norfolk. A quaint downtown with interesting eateries and and old time feel, you can easily get the feel of small town America with a quick drive from Norfolk.
Washington, DC: The opposite of small town America, Washington, DC feels incredibly different than Norfolk. Sign up for a free self guided tour of the capital, visit picturesque Alexandria, or catch one of the many sports games in the area. For those of you not from the mid-Atlantic, this is an absolute must-do before you leave Norfolk. With so much do, I'd highly reccomend making this a weekend trip.
